The only hope was Plex, but you have to really know what you're doing, and the app crashes a lot on older devices. That's in the TOS, and it's why nobody bothers to develop anything fresh for Roku. There have been some semi-pirate apps that have come and gone on the channel apps, but they get ratted out by the users, because the OS monitors what you watch and feeds it back to Roku. The OS has been tinkered with by some curious developers, and found to be Linux like with some closed source extensions that provide the base functions of the device it is used with. Hardware that's barely able to do what it needs to and not much more, it has the capability to spy on you without a privacy option (no VPN apps are allowed!), and closed source OS. It's far less expensive and time consuming to get a more easily hacked platform on a spare HDMI port, or cast to that device from a phone or old tablet. Can they be reprogrammed? Physically, yes, but that requires knowledge of the Roku OS, which nobody wants to hack, because the hardware is low quality, and it's not worth the time to do. They're subsidizing the hardware (and the low cost of the TV) by locking in services to the buttons. Think of the buttons as a cash cow for Roku. Roku tv remotes have power buttons and volume keys, but are worthless to Stand Alone (SA) roku. You might need to add some delays in there as well in order to allow the roku to process the button presses. The remote comes in five colors, and is easy to set up. Enter selects the app in question (which should be youtubeTV). Down moves it to the 2nd row, first column. Use the Roku mobile app to navigate the menus and help you sync the new remote if you dont have access to your old one. Left moves the cursor from the menu (home/setup/search/etc) into the apps. Home, home gets you back to the homescreen (if you're already in an app) then resets the iconlist to the top again. You can disable them, so long as you're comfortable getting a screwdriver and physically prying the remote open, but you can't otherwise change their functionality. Then create a macro that does "home, home, left, down, enter" In any case, let's cut to the chase: No, you can't reprogram Roku's quick shortcut buttons yourself. You have to be a little creative about the placement of the icons on the screen though.įor example, if you wanted youtubeTV as a hardbutton, you could set the youtubeTV as the first icon of the 2nd row on your homescreen. Having said that, I have created macros on the harmony that somewhat work as hardbuttons. ie Neflix, Amazon, Hulu, Pandora, RDIO, VUDU, Blockbuster, etc.īasically if Roku hasn't created a hardbutton code for it, the Harmony can't replicate it. As to your second issue, that is currently being performed by a CEC command, which is only capable of changing the input to the CEC device. Highly unlikely Roku will ever allow reprogramming any remote button. The only available options are for the buttons Roku has made on other remotes - so only the companies that have paid for the advertising on the official remotes, in other words.
